The early days…

Though the city of Cave Spring was not incorporated until January 22, 1852, Cave Spring Baptist Church was constituted with eight original members on September 24, 1836. This makes us, with only two exceptions, the oldest in Northwest Georgia. The building seen in the photo to the right was not built until 1851. Prior to its construction, the church met in a general store and then the dormitory of the Hearn School. It was during these early years as well that the church played a critical role in the founding of the Georgia School for the Deaf. It is worth noting that long before the construction of the permanent structure that still stands in Rolater Park today, the members of Cave Spring Baptist Church were making a meaningful impact in their community.

The church’s enrollment and attendance grew into the early 1900’s and it soon became apparent that a larger, more updated structure was needed. At a business meeting on October 11, 1931, it was resolved that the church would sell the property where the old church and Hearn Academy stand to Dr. Joseph B. Rolater for a sum of $10,000 with the understanding that the property would one day become a park.

The church today…

In keeping with the agreement, Dr. Rolater deeded the property to the City of Cave Spring on October 23, 1931 “for the benefits of the residents of said city.” This gift to the city still blesses the residents of our town to this day and the old church and Hearn Academy can be seen across the street from the front porch of the current church building. The new building was completed by December 1932. As the years passed, there have been additions, remodels, and a notable change in name. Through all of these changes, God has been faithful to preserve Cave Spring Baptist Church as a pillar in the small town of Cave Spring. And the current members and leadership are dedicated to ensuring the continued faithful witness of the Gospel to all those who call Cave Spring and the surrounding areas home.
